Insha’allah, in the near future, I plan to post excerpts from Hadhrat Maulana Qari Muhammad Tayyab sahib’s (ra) Maslak Ulama-e-Deoband (The Way/Ideology of the ‘Ulama of Deoband), the conclusion of which, is:
Religiously, the Ulama of Deoband are Muslim; as a sect, they belong to the Ahl as-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah; by math-hab (school of law), they are Hanafi; in mashrab (conduct), they are Sufi; in creed (kalaam), they are Maaturidi; in Suluk (spiritual discipline), they are Chisti – in fact, they combine all the sufi orders; in fikr (intellectual inclination) they are Waliullahi; in Usool (principle), they are Qasimi; in furoo’ (secondary matters), they are Rasheedi and in nisbat (connection), they are Deobandi.
Maulana Qari Muhammad Tayyab was the grandson of Maulana Qasim Nanotwi, the founder of Darul Uloom Deoband. He graduated from Darul Uloom Deoband in 1336 Ah (1918.)
His teachers include Mufti Azizur Rahman, Maulana Habibur Rahman Uthmani, Allamah Shabbir Ahmad Uthmani, Maulana Asghar Hussain and Allamah Anwar Shah Kashmiri (may Allah Have mercy on them all.) He recieved spiritual guidance from the likes of Shaykh al-Hind Hadhrat Maulana Mahmood Hasan and Hakeem al-Ummah Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (may Allah Have mercy on them both.)
He was the principal of Darul Uloom Deoband for a period of about 50 years during which the Darul Uloom progressed tremendously. Qari Muhammad Tayyab sahib (ra) was an outstanding orator and was able to speak on any Islamic subject for hours and hours.
He passed away in the month of Shawwal 1403 AH (July 1983)
