Hadhrat Maulana Mahmood al-Hasan sahib (ra), popularly known as Shaykh al-Hind was an eminent scholar and Mujahid. He was the first student of Darul Uloom Deoband and was later appointed as Shaykh al-Hadith (the teacher appointed to teach Sahih al-Bukhari) there.

He is among the distinguished disciples of Hadhrat Maulana Qasim Nanotwi, Hadhrat Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi and Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki (may Allah have mercy on them all.)

His students include Hakeem al-Ummah Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi, Maulana Husain Ahmad Madni, ‘Allamah Shabbir Ahmad ‘Uthmani, Mufti Kifayatullah, Maulana ‘Ubaidulllah Sindhi,Maulana Habibur Rahman ‘Uthmani and ‘Allamah Anwar Shah Kashmiri (may Allah have mercy on them all.)

Mufti Muhammad Taqi ‘Uthmani hafidhahullah relates a beautiful story about his modesty and humility. He says:

It was a regular programme followed during Ramadhan at the place of Hadhrat Shaykh al-Hind Maulana Mahmood al-Hasan (ra), that the Taraweeh prayer started after ‘Isha and continued throughout the night until dawn. The [recitation of the] Qur’an was completed every three or four days. A Hafiz recited the Qur’an and Shaykh al-Hind (ra) listened to the recitation behind him. He himself was not a hafiz of the Qur’an. At the end of the Taraweeh prayer, the respected Hafiz would lie down for a short nap near Shaykh al-Hind (ra).

The Hafiz sahib related, that one night, when he opened his eyes he saw that someone was massaging his legs. He thought that it was a pupil or a student. When he looked up, after some time, he found to his great surprise that Hadhrat Shaykh al-Hind himself was massaging his legs.

The Hafiz sahib got up at once and asked what the Shaykh was doing. Shaykh al-Hind (ra) replied,”you remain standing the whole night during Taraweeh. I am massaging your legs so that they may receive some comfort.”
