Initially, during his long stay in the blessed City of Madinah al-Munawwarah, Shaykh al-Islam Hadhrat Maulana Husayn Ahmad Madni (ra) endured many hardships and difficulties. During this period, Hadhrat Maulana Husayn Ahmad Madni (ra) as well as his family made many sacrifices. Once such instance has been related by Hadhrat Mufti Mahmud al-Hasan Gangohi (ra).

This small anecdote not only serves as an example of Hadhrat Madni’s (ra) life of sacrifice but also of his selflessness and his giving preference to others over himself. The story also highlights Hadhrat Maulana Madni (ra) imitating a particular act of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam which almost all of us, if not all, cannot ever claim to have done.

Mufti Mahmud al-Hasan Gangohi (may Allah have mercy on him) once said:

During Hadhrat [Maulana Husayn Ahmad] Madni’s stay in Madinah, he would cook the food himself. His family consisted of five brothers. After the food had been cooked, it would be distributed between the five. Hadhrat’s younger brother Mahmood would eat his share very quickly and then begin crying [for more]. Hadhrat would give him his [own] share and then tie a stone to his stomach.(1)

This is similar to what has been narrated about the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam and his Companions radiyallahu ‘anhum ajma’een in the Battle of the Trench, that due to extreme hunger they fastened stones to their stomachs.
